Guidelines for Evangelists

On Tuesday, June 28th, Dr. Geoff Tunnicliffe will be in Geneva, Switzerland to announce the public launch of the document "Christian Witness in a Multi-Religious World: Recommendations for Conduct". The document is the result of a 5 year cooperation between the WEA, the Pontifical Council for Inter Religious Dialogue (PCID) of the Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches (WCC). The focus of "Recommendations" is on the ethics of Christian mission and evangelism and the need for every Christian, every church and every Christian organization to live and preach the gospel in accordance with the life and teachings of Jesus.

The public announcement will take place at the offices of the World Council of Churches and will include, in addition to Dr. Tunnicliffe, Cardinal Tauran, President of PCID, and Dr. Olav Tveit, General Secretary of the WCC. Also present at the launch and press conference will be senior members of the WEA from the Religious Liberty and Theological Commissions who have worked closely with the WCC and PCID on the writing and editing of the document.

It is a historic text both for its content and because this is the first time since the 16th century that the 3 main bodies representing nearly all of world Christianity jointly endorse one document and recommend it to their respective constituencies. "We are very pleased and grateful to God for all those who have worked so hard on the production of this text. The WEA fully endorses this document and recommends it for study and application to all our member alliances, churches, organizations and individuals," says Dr. Tunnicliffe.

Some Comments

Fr. Tim – Does this document cover Christians from trying to convert other Christians or just from converting non Christians?

I don't know what it's like where you live. Where I live there isn't much proselytizing, es[ecially compared with what routinely went on a generation or so ago. Nobody has come knocking on my door in at least 30 years. There aren't any cult members approaching people on the street for a one on one experience. There are still a few street preachers at parks and other public places but they don't usually bother anyone.

I'm happy with this situation. Once back in the early '70s, on a college campus, I got lured in by the prospect of free food and a nice social gathering, by the Tony and Susan Alamo people. I ended up being held prisoner on a work farm out in the desert for a couple days and thought a couple of times I might be raped. Would have been longer but I climbed over the fence in the middle of the night, hiked several miles out to the highway and hitchhiked home. Most people have no idea how bad evangelical Christian groups used to be. Scum of the Earth.

Rationalist -the code will apply to all conversations but will be meaningless and not worth the paper it is written upon. The real code can only be effective if it was prescribed by the state and had criminal and civil penalties as Nepal proposed criminal code does. Article 160 of the proposed code also says no one will be allowed to do anything or behave in any way that could cause a person from a caste, community or creed to lose faith in his/her traditional religion or convert to a different religion. The proposal would also prohibit conversion “by offering inducements or without inducement,” and preaching “a different religion or faith with any other intent.” If found guilty, offenders could be imprisoned for a maximum of five years and fined up to 50,000 Nepalese rupees (US$685). If the offender is a foreigner,he or she would be deported within seven days of completing the sentence.

Lady Janus

what is it about some of you Christians that you think you own the morals of the world and the rest of us just rent them from you? Take your guilt and shove it someplace personal and leave the rest of us alone, willya?
